AIM: for those who want to work on Super Yachts, travel and see the world. Whether you already have experience in the hospitality and customer service industry our marine hospitality course will provide you with the knowledge of life a board and working on Super Yachts. We have designed this course to ensure all our candidates know as much as possible about the industry, the necessary skills that are needed to be a steward/stewardess and to be confident and a competent crew member on board any vessel.
COURSE OVERVIEW: We can’t stress how important this training is for those who want to gain work on luxury sail or motor yachts the world over. The course could be viewed as the first step towards a career in the mega dollar sailing industry, or with a gap year in mind, or done simply as a fun way to gain confidence and learn new skills. We have carefully created a programme that will give each aspiring “sailoress” the best tuition and certificates needed to work in the industry. Our international qualifications will increase your opportunities for placement once you’ve graduated with us.
PRE-REQUISTIE: none.
DURATION: 12 days (flexible programme options available.)

SYLLABUS:
- 1. RYA POWER BOAT LEVEL II
A RYA powerboat training course allows you the best of both worlds – your chance to drive someone else’s boat and the opportunity to gain the experience and knowledge to be safe afloat. More importantly you will come away understanding how boats work, the equipment you will need and the type, style and design features that you would want on your boat should you decided to purchase one.
Aim: To teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats.
The course may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planning and displacement, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type(s) of boat in which the training took place. The ratio of students to instructors 3:1
The Power Boat level II course runs over 2 days and covers the following:

- 2. STCW 95 (Standards of Training, Certificate and Watch keeping for Seafarers)
Basic training, comprising of the following modules:
Before being signed on as crew on any MCA Coded vessel the STCW -95 certificates need to be completed as part of the new manning requirements.
These courses consist of the following:
- Elementary First Aid at Sea
- Marine Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility with Personal Survival Techniques
All crew members must have the STCW 95 modules
Durations: 7 days from Monday – Sunday. Or from Saturday – Friday.
For the more experienced the following are also offered:
- Ship’s Captain Medical
- Advanced Marine Fire Fighting
- HOSPITALITY SKILLS:
- Professional etiquette and protocol, personal presentation.
- Table management, placements and settings
- Styles of service, courses and order of service, buffets
- Yacht steward style
- Bar tending and wine appreciations, including product knowledge of wines and ports and cigars.
- Understand the standards required for catering on yachts.
- Learn how to menu plan and provision for long passages
- Knowledge of essential food hygiene, tuition in catering.
- Menu planning and provisioning, including stowage, packing hazards, international regulations and dietary requirements.
- Introduction to nautical terminology and essential safety procedures.
- Laundry, ironing and folding techniques, detailing and maintaining the yacht interior, provisioning and storage
- Guest care, valet services, confidentiality
- Where to go and when to go
- CV’s, Crew agencies, Crew houses.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD STEWARD/STEWARDESS? A good steward/ess is polite, well groomed and lively. The knowledge and skills needed to perform the job are not difficult to learn but the attitude and art of good service is something that takes training and practise. This position requires a blend of responsibility, maturity and self-discipline along with a great sense of humour and the drive to provide exceptional service. You will need meticulous attention to detail both in your duties and in your personal presentation.

WHERE DO THESE COURSES RUN?
The steward/ess and RYA Power Boat level II course run from the 2 Oceans Maritime Academy Marine Hospitality training in Hout Bay. We are 20 minutes away from Cape Town and the airport. The STCW 95 courses run at the Academy of Maritime Medicine in Cape Town.
