Pre-requisites: No previous sailing experience is necessary. However a love for the ocean, travel and hard work is a must.

Qualify For: The mimimum requirement of all the skills necessary to work in the Super Yachting Industry

RYA MCA Deck Rated Courses


This is an entry level course that offers you an effective way to gain employment as qualified a crew member (deck hand) aboard yachts of all sizes - including Super Yachts.
2 Oceans Maritime Academy has specifically designed this course in order to meet the growing demand for professional, well trained crew members to work on Super Yachts and luxury yachts.


To gain the skills and minimum experience needed to work as qualified crewmember (deckhand) on luxury sail or motor yachts. This includes being confident and competent in all aspects of crewing on both large and small vessels and to be aware of what is expected of you.

Full Course Outline

Training: RYA Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Radio (SRC), First Aid, Fire Fighting, PSSR, Power Boat Level II.

On the water:
Gain practical sailing experience in: sailing, crewing, navigating, watch-keeping, maintenance and seamanship skills.

On land: Learn the principals of boat handling, navigation, passage planning, rules of the “road” and SRC Radio. Not to mention: first aid, fire fighting, sea survival, super yacht training, care of vessel paintwork, glass fibre, varnish, repairs to sails, winch servicing, rope work, rigging, diesel engine maintenance and basic repairs.

on board one of our 2 new yachts (a Fast 42’ or Pacer 37’) is included in the following modules:

  • RYA Competent Crew

  • RYA Day Skipper theory

  • RYA Day Skipper practical

  • RYA SRC Radio

  • RYA Power Boat Level II

Included in course fee:

  • Food during practical sailing modules only (Competent Crew, Day Skipper practical)

  • All RYA course completion certificates

  • Accommodation on board the yacht for the duration of the sailing and theory modules (Comp Crew, Day Skipper Theory, Day Skipper Practical, Power Boat Level II and SRC)

  • Mooring fees and use of yacht clubs

  • Use of tender

  • Fuel

  • RYA Course material


  • Transport to 2 Oceans Maritime Academy

  • RYA Sail Cruising Log book (R350.00)

  • R100 deposit for marine disk (gives you access to the Hout Bay Yacht Club and onto the Marina)

  • RYA exam fee for the SRC radio qualification (£30.00 this fee is payable directly to the RYA in the UK)

  • Food money during shorebase courses (Day Skipper Theory, Radio SRC, Power Boat level II, and any weekend off)

  • Accommodation for the STCW 95 modules (7 days) . We can recommend the Hout Bay Backpackers which is across the road from us, they charge between R140.00 per night for a dorm room and R480 per night for a private room.

1st week STCW 95

Mon – Fri RYA Competent Crew

Sat – Sun RYA Power Boat Level II

Mon – Fri RYA Day Skipper theory

Sat RYA SRC Radio course and exam

Sun Super Yacht training, CV’s, where to go and when, industry related advice

Mon – Fri RYA Day Skipper Practical

The above course is the basic minimum you should do if you are serious about finding work in the Super Yacht Industry.
