Adventure weekend for high school guys and girls

2 Oceans Maritime Academy has specifically designed this 2-day weekend course in order to give parents and teens the chance to do something completely new. It’s the ideal opportunity for families to get the chance to spend some quality time together. Accommodation is on board the yacht for the duration of the weekend.

Training

This course provides a short introduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the module participants will have experienced the steering of a yacht, sail handling, rope work and be aware of safety on board.

  • The yacht – gain a basic knowledge of sea terms, parts of the boat, her rigging and sails.
  • Rope work – learn how to tie a figure of eight, round turn and two half hitches and a bowline. In addition to securing a rope to a cleat, using winches and jamming cleats.
  • Underway – enjoy the experience of sailing a yacht on all points of sail and steering a yacht under sail or power.
  • Rules of the road – learn how to keep an efficient lookout at sea.
  • Meteorology – know where to obtain a weather forecast.
  • Man overboard recovery – learn what action to be take if someone has fallen over board.
  • Clothing and equipment – know how to comply with the rules that govern the wearing of safety harnesses, life jackets and personal buoyancy aids.
  • Emergency equipment and precautions – be aware of hazards on board a yacht,  know what action to take in the event of an emergency.
